2012 toyota sequoia review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Seating for eight, room for stuff. introductionthe toyota sequoia can transport eight people in comfort with room left over for cargo. Sequoia's interior is designed with generous seats, big armrests, and lots of storage for passengers, with an optional entertainment system for long trips. Toyota's star system, a comprehensive combination of electronic safety, stability and traction controls, is standard on all models, as are eight airbags. The standard 4. 6-liter v8 is rated at 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque and an epa-estimated 14/20 mpg city/highway. Sequoia limited and platinum models come with a 5. 7-liter v8 rated at 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque and an epa-estimated 13/18 mpg city/highway. Both come with a 6-speed automatic. A flex-fuel version of the 5. 7-liter engine is available for burning inefficient e85 (85 percent ethanol, 15 percent gasoline), dropping fuel economy to a dismal 9/13 mpg city/highway with e85 or 13/17 mpg with gasoline. We recommend the 4. 6-liter. The base engine got a boost in both power and efficiency for 2010. Changes since then have been confined to options and trim levels. For 2012, sequoia platinum models come with a blind-spot monitor, and all 2012 sequoia models now include the tundra's trailer sway control (tsc). this second-generation sequoia borrows heavily in appearance from the toyota tundra, looking very much like the pickup from the front. Sequoia uses much of the tundra's running gear, but with an independent rear suspension for better ride quality and room for third-row seating. the sequoia represents a modern take on the traditional sport utility vehicle. It's big, built to transport people and their gear in comfort across long distances on north american super-highways. It can tow a sizable trailer or continue when the pavement ends and many other suvs don't look so tough anymore. It's all about getting people in and out easily, keeping them comfy, and making heavy loads secure and routine. It rides quietly, steers easily, and with three models, two drivetrains, and a full complement of features, the sequoia can meet a variety of wants, needs and price points. The sr5 is available with 4wd 44,155). The bigger, 5. 7-liter v8 is optional 625) with either 2wd or 4wd. A sport package 691) upgrades the second row bench to bucket seats (reducing total seating to seven) and adds 20-inch alloy wheels with a unique finish, and a color-keyed sport grille. The rear 60/40 third-row seat is power operated and all rear side windows have shades. The dash is upgraded with brighter optitron gauges and a multi-information display, and a 14-speaker jbl synthesis audio system. Outside, the limited adds chrome trim, 20-inch wheels, power liftgate, and power-folding, self-dimming mirrors with integrated turn signals. Options for the limited include a rear-seat dvd entertainment system 1,670), second-row bucket seats (no charge), and dvd-based navigation 1,460). the platinum 58,580) is a seven-seater with heated bucket seats and a console in the middle row. It builds on limited equipment with 20-inch diamond-finish alloy wheels, a rear load-leveling suspension and adaptive shocks, and a memory feature for the mirrors, power-adjustable steering column and power seats, which are heated and air conditioned in the front. Platinum also gets standard puddle-lamps and reverse-tilt for outside mirrors, navigation/backup camera, active cruise control, rear-seat entertainment, wood-grain trim for steering wheel, doors and shifter. The new-for-2012 blind spot monitor, exclusive to the platinum model, warns drivers of vehicles traveling in their blind spots. walkaroundthe toyota sequoia is long and wide, with a long wheelbase, and is designed to look tall and oversized, so as to project strength from a distance. It's every inch a full-size suv. The sequoia shares design features with the tundra pickup from the front bumper to the b-pillar, along with numerous drive train components. the low windshield angle accentuates bulk below the hood line, and large high-mounted headlamps add an alert look to a cabin-forward design. Exterior mirrors are large, because they have to be for towing, but careful smoothing has reduced wind noise, as does the use of partially hidden wipers that likewise must be very large to sweep the windshield. All the roof pillars are big as well, and the flare in the bodywork to cover the rear tires makes the area between the wheels look smaller than it is. The rear doors open wide, for easy child seat and passenger access. Parking sensors and a pair of rear camera display choices enable easier parking and the ability to avoid people or toys lurking in the driveway. the receiver hitch is well incorporated in the rear bumper, and the bumper has decent low-slip top for loading the roof rack. To avoid damage from shopping carts or narrow tree-lined forest trails the taillights are up high and the rear reflectors are inset in the bumper where they get dirty quickly. interiorthe toyota sequoia cabin is built for passenger comfort, with generous legroom and headroom. Seating is designed for long days of driving, with a comfortable, broad driver's seat with power lumbar support. The seats have soft, wide bolsters, easy to climb over getting in and out, and the kind of adjustability that allows a driver to shift around during long drives. The sr5's cloth and platinum's perforated leather each offer two colors, graphite and sand beige, each as bland as they sound; to these the limited adds red rock, a still-muted but more interesting, southwest-flavored shade suggesting of bricks or red-clay ceramics. the sequoia revels in bigness. The dash is simple and focused, with two central gauges, speedometer and tachometer, flanked by fuel, temperature and voltage gauges. The steering column tilts and telescopes, and it's electrically and memory-linked on platinum. switches and dials are used to control windows and the hvac system. The hvac system is designed to define and maintain three different climate zones, two in the front, and one in the back. We think toyota does a good job when it comes to switch feel and operational consistency of dials and other touch points. two overhead compartments are suitable for sunglasses, and the control strip has sunroof controls. An electrochromic rear view mirror is standard except on sr5, and the mirror contains built-in garage door opener buttons operating on three different frequencies. On the a-pillar are hefty grab handles, with grips big enough to support body weigh.

The serenity is a function of many things, including the avalon's underlying design, vibration-mitigating features and good build quality. But it also delivers good acceleration and mileage for such a roomy car. Its automatic transmission is quick shifting and decisive. The front seats are roomy and comfortable, the back seat downright spacious. Empty-nesters will appreciate the avalon for its flexibility, and families for its manageable base price, which includes a good stereo with cd changer and most of the features anyone really needs. the avalon also has the latest safety technology, starting with a full complement of front, side and head-protection airbags. It scores well in government and insurance-industry crash tests. And, in addition to the now-standard vsc skid-management electronics, it comes with traction control and an anti-lock brake system (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. These features make sure that stopping power is distributed evenly, regardless of road surface, and that the brakes apply with full force in a panic stop. it all makes the avalon easy to like and even easier to enjoy. Think of it as a refuge from a hectic world. for 2010, there are no significant changes. An all-new avalon is being introduced for 2011. lineupthe toyota avalon is available in three trim levels distinguished by the level of standard equipment. All come with a 268-horsepower, 3. 5-liter v6 and six-speed automatic transmission. the avalon xl 27,945) is well equipped, with a full complement of power accessories and features such as an eight-way power driver's seat, dual-zone climate control with cabin air filter and audio and climate controls on the steering wheel. The xls also comes standard with a power moonroof, heated outside mirrors with electrochromic auto-dimming on the driver's side, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and homelink universal transceiver, and an anti-theft system. the avalon limited 35,285) upgrades with a 360-watt jbl synthesis audio system with 12 speakers and blue tooth connectivity, a power rear sunshade, toyota's smart key proximity key system, hid headlamps, a wood-and-leather-trimmed shift knob and steering wheel, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and driver and passenger seat heaters and cooling fans. options include the power moonroof 860) and anti-theft system 220) for the base xl model. A navigation system is also available. Dynamic laser-guided cruise control 600) is optional only on the limited. safety features on all avalons include active front seat headrests, which are intended to cradle the head more effectively in a rear impact and limit whiplash injuries. Vehicle stability control (vsc) is standard. All models also have anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake-force distribution (ebd) and brake assist. Occupant protection features include front-impact airbags, a driver's knee airbag, seat-mounted side-impact airbags for front passengers and side-curtain head-protection airbags for outboard passengers front and rear. walkaroundat a glance, the toyota avalon looks dignified and understated, but closer inspection reveals some sophisticated styling themes that inspire a sense of elegance. Examined more closely, the avalon almost looks french in its impressionistic impact. overall, the avalon is eight inches longer than toyota's top-selling camry sedan. By most exterior dimensions, the avalon is roughly the same size as the ford taurus, chevrolet impala, and chrysler 300. Compared to european luxury sedans, it's larger than the mid-size mercedes e-class, but smaller than the full-size s-class sedan. lots of the avalon's styling features have been optimized to reduce wind noise inside the car, including the shape of the windshield pillars and side mirrors and low placement of the wipers under the hood line. The avalon limited upgrades with unique, sound dampening glass in the windshield. the limited mirrors also include a couple model specific features, starting with led turn signals in the glass that are visible to other drivers. In side view, subtle character lines below the windows and above the door sills add a hint of sculpting to the avalon's flanks. It's quiet, well-crafted and more than spacious, and we'd rank it at the top of its class. The cabin contributes to the avalon's serene ambience and, from the functional perspective, it's first rate. materials are generally good quality. A very few trim pieces, such as silver-painted plastic parts and the housing around the steering column, demonstrate that the avalon is not an extra-expensive luxury car. But the fit of the various parts and panels is impeccable and, overall, the avalon's interior feels like quality. Even the extra-glossy, wood-grain trim toyota designers seem so fond of looks pretty good inside the avalon. the front seats are big, fairly flat and comfortable. The avalon limited features a fan in the seat cushion and seatback that blows air through the perforated leather trim to improve comfort. the steering wheel tilts and telescopes over a substantial range, and it's wrapped with leather on all but the base avalon xl. The wheel spokes have buttons to adjust audio and climate settings, and those buttons are also a great compromise: big and easy to find, but not confusing. Wipers and lights follow toyota's familiar pattern, with the light switch on the left stalk and wipers on the right. Its so-called optitron gauges are large, crisp and easy to see through the top half of the steering wheel. The large lcd informational display is located right in the center of the dash, above the switch stack. Those most frequently adjusted, including the tuner and volume control, are bigger than the knobs in most other cars. The six-cd changer is standard in all avalons, and so is an audio jack to connect ipods or mp3 players. The upgrade jbl audio package adds bluetooth capability and 360 watts of output. It sounds fantastic, though we could certainly live with the standard stereo. the primary temperature, air flow and fan adjustment knobs are huge, located on either side of the stereo and prominently back-lit in pastel turquoise that reminds us of miami beach. They operate with a firm, steady action, and they're nearly impossible to miss when the driver reaches a hand from the steering wheel. the sunroof button and overhead light switch are located above the rearview mirror, with a drop-down sunglasses holder. One omission is the avalon's lack of individual reading lights for front-seat passengers, and the omission is more glaring because the interior is generally so nice. Buttons for the seat warmers are dials offering a range of heat intensity, located on the center console next to the gear selector. the center console itself is simple but effective, with three touch-release doors. One door exposes the cupholders, and the others reveal storage compartments. The larger compartment has two power points and the audio jack. There's also a felt-lined change bin. the avalon's door pockets have no lining material, and the hard plastic allows items such as sunglasses to slide (and potentially scratch) easily. Still, those pockets are wide and deep, and we love how they swing open like a folder to allow an easy reach inside. The glove box will swallow a whole lot of gloves, along with a clutch or handbag. the limited model comes with a re.
